Abstract: Abstract Smith became a beneficiary of the ‘Argyll’ interest in the person of Archibald, Earl of Ilay and the 3rd Duke, who succeeded his childless elder brother to the title in 1743 (already a critical year for Smith). The Argyll brothers, as we have seen, were staunch supporters of the Union of Scotland with England, managed ‘Scotch’ affairs for the government and held onto their prominence from their ability to deliver the bulk of the ‘Scotch vote’ in the House of Commons to grateful ministries.1
