Chapter 6 in Japan — A Modern Retail Superpower, 2005, pp 103-122 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Since the 1960s, general merchandise retailers have been the most important retailers, as well as the most innovative. From 1972 until 2000, a GMS chain called Daiei was the largest retailer in Japan by sales. Daiei has since declined, but GMS chains are still at the core of the largest retail groups.
