Strategies for Innovation and Competitive Advantage

Chapter 3 in Outsourcing of R&D in the Pharmaceutical Industry, 2004, pp 56-85 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract For a number of years, pharmaceutical companies have departed from a tradition of strict vertical integration so as to gain access to external sources of technology and expertise for the purpose of product and technological development. It is therefore necessary to examine the strategies employed by pharmaceutical companies at both the firm and industry level. To this end, particular emphasis must be placed on strategies of collaboration and co-operation between pharmaceutical firms and external agents given that a rise in such activity follows the trend of the wider industrial community.
