Outsourcing Pharmaceutical Product Development

Chapter 5 in Outsourcing of R&D in the Pharmaceutical Industry, 2004, pp 113-145 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Outsourcing has become an essential business tool for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical devices industries. The traditional vertically integrated, self-sufficient organisational model is all but obsolete. Today, companies experiment with strategic alliances, networks and other forms of commercial relationships to discover more efficient ways of managing the organisation. The era of virtual integration and that of the ‘virtual organisation’ has dawned, and has rapidly gained momentum. In this modern epoch, a new philosophy has emerged which defines the ingredients for management success: speed, expertise, flexibility and innovation.
