The Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation

Thomas Durand

from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents an overview of definitions of key words and concepts (techniques, technology, science, invention, innovation). It also describes what the management of technology and the management of innovation are about. The chapter reviews the literature and identifies seven streams of contributions (managing R&D; connecting science, technology and innovation; understanding the dynamics of technologies; promoting innovation; recognizing the importance of organizational innovation; managing technologies and competencies; integrating technology into strategic management). On that basis, the chapter then identifies current challenges for practioners (technology and knowledge intelligence, organizing for innovation, gaining access to technologies and competence) and presents an integrated framework to think technology and innovation strategically.
