Spanning Roles

Andrew Ward

Chapter Chapter 8 in The Leadership Lifecycle, 2003, pp 104-126 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract While the transition from one phase in the lifecycle to another often results in a change of leadership because the leadership roles at each phase are very different from one another, it is important to emphasize that the leadership roles of Creator, Accelerator, Sustainer, Transformer, and Term-inator are roles and not individuals. As such it is entirely possible for a person to span multiple roles in an organization or over the course of the individual’s career across multiple organizations. To illustrate this concept, we will take a more in-depth look at three individuals who have spanned multiple roles in their organizations.
