Corporate Sustainability: The New Catch Phrase?

Ulrich Steger

Chapter 1 in The Business of Sustainability, 2004, pp 3-4 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract If you are a follower of current political debates you will not have missed the rhetoric devoted to sustainable development, with government papers by the score (the exception perhaps being the Bush administration) and innumerable statements on the subject by companies and industry associations. Nobody wants to be the ‘odd man out’, be they British nuclear power companies, Brazilian pulp and paper companies or Danish cleaning service providers; all pay tribute to the slogan ‘Doing well by doing good’. Environmentalists and social activists are uneasy with this trend, with officials muttering about ‘greenwash’ while at the same time considering how they can jump on the bandwagon and cooperate with companies.
