Chapter 5 in The Business of Sustainability, 2004, pp 75-98 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The focus in this chapter is on the leading global car manufacturers. In terms of product segment the light-vehicle sector, providing individual transport, is the focal point of the research reported here.1 However the results also apply to freight transport as most of the sustainability issues are comparable and the car manufacturers in this study also produce trucks. The participating companies were DaimlerChrysler (as the reference company), Volkswagen, Ford, Opel (GM Europe), Toyota and Nissan. This diverse sample ensured that all the important car manufacturing regions in the world — Europe, the USA and Asia — were covered. The findings are based on empirical data from the following sources: Close to 60 in-depth, personal interviews lasting an average of two hours each with sustainability officers and executive managers from leading automotive companies, senior executives from suppliers or related industries (such as the railway sector), and stakeholders from various interest groups, such as financial investors, governments, regulatory bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and experts. More than 60 surveys completed by automotive managers.
