Union-Based Pension Funds and Social Investment: A New Role for Unions in the Economy

Abstract:
Abstract Trusteed pension funds in Canada are estimated at $543.8 billion as of the first quarter of 2002 and control 35 per cent of equity in the stock markets (Canada, 2003). Yet over $400 billion of these pension assets are under the control of fund managers in the financial industry. This paper argues that while unions have been relatively passive in the past about this massive capital pool, they are now viewing active ownership of pension capital as a strategy for union renewal.
