Chapter 9 in The History of Consumer Credit: Doctrines and Practices, 2000, pp 119-150 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract New countries develop new techniques, whereas old countries adapt traditions to suit the times. The history of consumer credit in the United States is almost entirely free of historic influences, whereas in Europe, it still suffers from a sort of mental hangover, the result of centuries of bans and taboo. Practices derive from and are explained by age-old traditions. For this reason, this chapter, which is devoted to Europe, is mainly concerned with France and Great Britain, since they represent the two mentalities which diverged in the sixteenth century, that is Reformist and Catholic.
