The Power of Assertive Relationships

Abstract: Abstract Assertive relationships have the power to transform people, and to create organizations that are truly inclusive and respecting of difference. They are relationships that are based on a high degree of self-respect, mutual respect, and regard for each other. Integrity, openness, and honesty are values that underpin assertive behavior. Those organizations that are committed to developing people and performance have clear values and beliefs that are translated into observable behaviors. People know what the values are and what is expected of them by way of behavior, and know what to expect from others. Indeed an increasing number of organizations include these observable behaviors in people’s performance appraisals. The behaviors are for the most part based on how people manage themselves—physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually— and how they manage and communicate in their relationships with others. The focus is on both what people do and on how they do it.
