The Power of Partnership: States and Solidarities in the Global Era

Chapter 2 in The Theory and Practice of Local Governance and Economic Development, 2008, pp 13-39 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract We live in an age of profound transformations. Global economic pressures, the digital revolution and major shifts in family structure show us that contemporary Western societies are significantly different to those of previous generations. The sociologists tell us that this shift in traditional attachments is matched by a new drive for personal identity: …the social order of the national state, class, ethnicity and the traditional family is in decline. The ethic of individual self-fulfilment and achievement is the most powerful current in modern society. (Beck, 2000: 165)
