Abstract:
Abstract With the approach of a new millennium, the UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan, proposed that a ‘Millennium Assembly of the United Nations’ be held in the year 2000 with the overall theme of ‘The United Nations in the Twenty-First Century’ and four sub-themes: peace and security, including disarmament; development, including poverty eradication; human rights; and strengthening the United Nations. The UN General Assembly adopted the proposal and agreed that a three-day UN Millennium Summit be held at the start of it fifty-fifth session in September 2000.
