Introduction

Chi Lo

A chapter in Understanding China’s Growth, 2007, pp 1-12 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Most people who talk about China’s economic ascent to the world stage are referring to its rise from the three decades of instability between 1946 and 1976. This period was characterized by civil wars (1946–50) and the Maoist era which encompassed the Cultural Revolution (1966–69), though many would include the years up to 1976 when the Gang of Four were arrested. However, this characterization misses the historical perspective. The omission is indicative of a common problem of many observers focusing on partial information in reading China’s economic development.
