Water Wars
Michael Backman
Chapter 8 in Asia Future Shock, 2008, pp 57-65 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Asia’s populations are not just getting bigger, they’re getting richer. This means that not only will Asia consume more water but more water per capita. But there is a problem: the absolute quantity of fresh water in Asia is falling. The problem will be especially acute in China and Indonesia. And in India, the real challenge will be urban water sanitation. The growing scarcity of this most basic of commodities must be factored into any scenario building for Asia’s future.
