Multinationality of the Firm: Conceptualization and Measurement

Ahmet H. Kirca

Chapter 2 in Thought Leadership in Advancing International Business Research, 2008, pp 41-56 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Internationalization has been a key construct that has attracted considerable attention in international business (IB) in the last four decades. A large body of research has focused on the internationalization of the firm because it potentially involves a central process that fundamentally affects the structure, functioning, strategy, and performance of the firm. In the extant literature, various conceptualizations have been employed to refer to the extent of firm internationalization (cf. Grant, 1987; Geringer et al., 1989; Sullivan and Bauerschmidt, 1990; Tallman and Li, 1996; Gomes and Ramaswamy, 1999, among others). Several terms, such as the degree of internationalization (Sullivan, 1994), multinationality (Grant, 1987), international geographic diversification (Vachani, 1991), geographic scale and scope of foreign operations (Qian and Li, 2002), have been used to refer to the extent to which firms are international (multinationality of the firm hereafter).1
