Globalisation and Economic Development
Henry Bernard Loewendahl
Chapter 4 in Bargaining with Multinationals, 2001, pp 59-90 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract FDI is central to the relationship between MNCs and economic development. MNCs, by definition, are firms that engage in FDI (Dunning, 1981), and the level and structure of FDI in countries and localities influences the scope for economic development. The objective of this chapter is to examine international trends in FDI over time to understand the significance of FDI for economic development. Given the importance of technology and innovation to structural change and the competitiveness of firms and states (Chapter 2), we assess the extent to which the growth of FDI involves the transfer of technological activities to host countries.
