Abstract: Abstract The aim of this study was to enhance our knowledge about innovation mechanisms in sectors in which firms innovate without doing internal research. Greater insight into the motives behind innovation in sectors where R&D is weak enables us to define appropriate tools for supporting innovation and to identify the most relevant levels of intervention (region, state, European Union (EU)).
