Now that people, groups and social systems have been considered, we should move our attention on to more traditional ‘technical’ project management activities and to roll out the new technology. By this point in the implementation process as much of the preparatory work as possible is complete and as many people-related issues as possible have been dealt with. Plans are now executed and the transition process from the ‘present state’ to the ‘desired state’ is managed. This is the stage that most people equate with implementation, and it is when many of the planned changes actually take place. Many of the group/individual-level implementation activities from Chapters 4, 5 and 6 carry on into this stage and the activities associated with this technical roll-out stage seamlessly flow into the confirmation stage (Chapter 8). In this chapter, we will briefly consider the importance of technical training, some options for systems conversion and project change management.
