Abstract: Abstract Play forms an important conceptual foundation for the practice of Thinking from Within, which subsequent chapters will describe and illustrate. Play is a natural human activity that has been widely acknowledged to have significant emotional, social and cognitive benefits for children and adults. Based on a traditional view on play as a tool for building up the minds of children, adult play is usually regarded as frivolous and of questionable value at work. It is hence chiefly the ‘childish’ aspects of play that are officially recognized while the ambiguity, imagination and other qualities of play that benefit humans of all ages are rarely regarded as play. For instance, play as described by Winnicott (1971) is far from an aimless activity or simply having fun, although that may be part of it. Play involves the capacity to relax our control needs and become more open-minded about what might emerge. Thus, to think from within we need to be able to play.1
