Communication and Decision-making

Timothy Dean Keeley

Chapter 5 in International Human Resource Management in Japanese Firms, 2001, pp 141-171 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The focus of this chapter is on the variables of communication and decision-making in the Conceptual Model of Factors Affecting HCN Integration. First of all, language, culture and behaviour issues affecting communication are discussed. The concept of high and low context cultures is presented to help explain some of the challenges Japanese face in communicating with non-Japanese. It is pointed out that certain cultural attitudes such as the belief in the uniqueness of Japanese language and culture (nihonjinron) negatively affect intercultural communication. Next, there is a discussion of organizational communication and the flow of information in Japanese MNCs. Common reasons for misunderstandings between Japanese PCN and HCN managers are given.
