Reforms to Financial Regulation
Ed Balls and
Gus O’Donnell
Chapter 7 in Reforming Britain’s Economic and Financial Policy, 2002, pp 110-131 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter sets out the economic rationale for the regulation of financial services, the current scope of financial regulation, how that scope developed, and why it was necessary to bring it all within the ambit of a single regulator — the Financial Services Authority. The chapter also discusses briefly other new elements in the Government’s policy towards financial regulation, including the benchmarking of financial services and stakeholder pensions. The chapter reflects the situation as of July 2001.
