Chapter 8 in Banking in the New Europe, 2002, pp 186-205 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Returns on assets (ROA) and returns on equity (ROE) of Italian banks compare rather unfavourably with those of other banking systems in Europe. The impression one derives looking at these yields is that, as a consequence of the introduction of the single currency, increasing Europewide competition could see Italian banks as hopeless losers, in spite of the restructuring process in which they are currently involved.
