Abstract: Abstract Demographics and Socioeconomics. New Mexico, located in the Mountain region of the United States, has a population of 1.9 million people, making it the fifteenth least populous state in 2005. The state’s population increased by 68,154 people from 2000 to 2005, and is projected to increase to 2.1 million by 2025. This 0.6 percent projected annual growth rate is below the projected national average of 1.0 percent. The state’s 2005 per capita personal income of $27,912 was the sixth lowest in the United States, some $6,583 below the national average. Per capita income in New Mexico grew at an average annual rate of 4.7 percent from 2000 to 2005, compared to 2.9 percent nationally.
