Chapter 12 in Morals and Markets, 2008, pp 169-181 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract For millennia, the Persian Gulf oasis of Al Qatif was famous for its date palms and shrimp, and its marketplace, the suq. Now a Saudi Arabian oil boom city of 500 thousand people, Al Qatif made international headlines in late 2007 when a government-backed religious court there sentenced a young woman to two hundred lashes and six months in jail.
