Utopias of Cooperation
Daniel Friedman
Chapter 4 in Morals and Markets, 2008, pp 59-71 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Fifty years ago, communism looked like a juggernaut. Small, quarrelsome bands of dissidents had grown over the previous half century into one of the largest and most ambitious empires the world has ever seen. The ideology had engulfed Russia, Eastern Europe, and China, and it seemed to be taking hold in other big countries like India and Indonesia. In the West, many opinion leaders predicted a communist future for the entire world, some (like economist Joseph Schumpeter) sadly, and others gladly.
