Abstract: Abstract Alabama, located in the East South Central region of the United States, had a population of 4.6 million people in 2006, making it the twenty-third most populous state. The state’s population increased by 151,930 people from 2000 to 2006, and is projected to increase to 4.8 million by 2025. This 0.2% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. Per capita personal income in Alabama was $30,841 in 2006, up from $29,255 in 2005. For 2006, this was ninth lowest in the country and $5,788 below the national average. From 2000 to 2006, per capita income in Alabama grew at an average annual rate of 4.4%, compared to 3.5% nationally.
