Abstract:
Abstract New technologies, such as e-commerce and wireless internet access; globalization; atomization; privatization in the public sector; and natural and man-made catastrophes, are external factors that impact the future of organizations and the meaning of affiliation and employment. This chapter addresses this quandary from the perspectives of chaos, complexity, and psychoanalytic theory. If we accept the premises of chaos and complexity theories on the high level of uncertainty and unpredictability, then what are the psychological and emotional prerequisites for organizational membership? How does one survive the anxities and potential violence resident in chaotic change? Will individual ego strength and the integrity of the core self permit successful personal adaptation and the maintenance of personal boundaries for leaders standing at the edge of chaos?
