Creating sustainable value
David E. Hawkins
Chapter Chapter 29 in Corporate Social Responsibility, 2006, pp 256-262 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Corporate social responsibility has become the watchword for ethical governance but to explore its roots involves a much deeper understanding of sustainability, encompassing social responsibility alongside environmental and economic drivers. Socially responsible business leadership and enterprises are not new. Victorian visionaries, including the Lever brothers, the Cadbury brothers and Titus Salt, through the Co-operative movement to modern innovators, such as the Body Shop or Ben & Jerry’s ice cream have all tried to build up a business model that did not exploit people and contribute to the community.
