What is Really Happening Globally?
Graeme Snooks
Chapter 3 in The Global Crisis Makers, 2000, pp 33-56 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The real global crisis, I argue in the opening chapter, is a hidden crisis. It is the consequence not of the slowdown in East Asia but of the neoliberal policies of the Western world. The economic problems that emerged in various parts of the world during the 1990s are a normal outcome of the global dynamic process. There is nothing unique about these problems and without the hidden crisis they will not lead to global depression. Yet this argument begs the questions: What is the global process that has produced the problems of East Asia and how will they be resolved? To answer these questions I briefly review the orthodox story and then I outline the real story – the strategic story.
