Abstract: Abstract China’s grain production has achieved remarkable growth in the past two decades. This success is particularly spectacular given that land has been moving out of cereal production due to competition from more profitable farm activities and non-farm industries. While suspicions exist over whether the trend of yield growth can be maintained in the future (Brown 1995), others are optimistic about China’s grain production (Lin 1995; Huang, Rozelle and Rosegrant 1995; MOA 1996). The conflicting conclusions from these studies highlight an urgent need to better understand the Chinese grain economy.
