The Dynamics and Spatial Distribution of Japanese Investment in China

Jean-Pascal Bassino () and René Teboul

Chapter 5 in China and India, 1999, pp 73-94 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The dynamics and spatial distribution of Japanese investment in China have several specific patterns. In spite of this country being the main economic power in the area, Japan’s direct foreign investment (DFI) flows represent a relatively small share of the total. Although it may be necessary to re-evaluate the amount of Japanese FDI, this state of affairs seems to result from a better understanding of the country’s risks. A greater concern for the medium-term return rate on investment than other foreign investors has, in many cases, induced arbitrage flows in favour of other East Asian countries. The same kind of considerations, but also geographical, political and historical factors, explain why the regional allocation of Japanese FDI flows in China is rather different. Thus its impact is concentrated on a few provinces where its contribution to economic development appears significant.
