Chapter Chapter VI in Meta-Luxury, 2012, pp 107-142 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Deriving from the Greek historia (‘narrative’, ‘history’), the word ‘history’ is defined as ‘the study of past events; the past considered as a whole; a continuous record of past events or trends’.ii Those def nitions find one of their earliest confluences in a work that is regarded as one of the seminal works in Western literature, The Histories of Herodotus. Written from the 450s to the 420s BC, it constitutes an expansive cultural, geographic, political and social record of the age. The work is now segmented into nine books, each named after one of the nine Muses. Above all, it was seen to have established the genre and study of history in the Western world. It is a world-renowned mark and marker of a truly unique achievement.
