Chapter Chapter Thirteen in Cross-Sector Leadership for the Green Economy, 2011, pp 241-260 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract To date, technological innovations in some industries have resulted in significantly reduced emissions and increased shares of nonfossil fuels in energy production (Kivimaa, 2008). Nevertheless, several environmental challenges persist related to climate change, biodiversity, and chemicals dispersed through consumer products. Green innovation can be defined as hardware or software innovation that is related to green products or processes, including the innovation in technologies that are involved in energy saving, pollution prevention, waste recycling, green product designs, and corporate environmental management (Chen, Lai, & Wen, 2006; Shrivastava, 1995). This type of innovation involves the recognition by firms that environmental problems arise from the development, manufacture, distribution, and consumption of their products and services. Furthermore, green innovation requires the integration of environmental issues into the firm’s strategic planning process (Banerjee, 2002).
