Chapter Chapter Sixteen in Cross-Sector Leadership for the Green Economy, 2011, pp 295-304 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The Nobel Prize winning economist Doug North (2005) has established that major economic leaps forward do not rest on technology alone. They require a sound institutional foundation, but the nature of this institutional foundation and how it works is not well-known. If movement toward a strong institutional foundation is firmly in place, then the chances of breakthroughs occurring in such important areas of the green economy as renewable energy production, storage, and utilization and/or next-generation feedstocks like algae systems or biological or chemical catalysis are likely to be greater. This chapter provides nine conclusions from academic research about what is needed for the green economy to gain momentum. It then turns to a practitioner’s perspective and provides six key challenges that practitioners typically believe must be confronted and overcome.
