A chapter in The Greening of the Automotive Industry, 2012, pp 1-10 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The automotive industry has a strong presence in the global economy and employs a significant proportion of the working population. It has been contributing to the growth of modern society by satisfying everyday mobility. However, it has been accused of affecting the environment and public health. In Europe, CO2 emissions from the transport sector have increased by 29 per cent since 1990, whereas those of other sectors have decreased by 22 per cent. The contribution of the transport sector to the EU’s CO2 emissions now stands at 30 per cent, up from 20.5 per cent in 1990.
