Chapter 4 in Environmental Innovation and Firm Performance, 2013, pp 88-119 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter measures of each variable are presented in order to test previous hypotheses. First, we analyse previous empirical studies on environmental innovation with the aim of identifying current trends around this topic. Then, taking into account previous theoretical developments (see Chapter 2) and the empirical analyses regarding environmental innovation, those measures that are better adapted to the purpose of this research will be used. Then, we put forward the explanation of the questionnaire design and research resume. Finally, focusing on the previously cited Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) regulations we will identify our research sample and analyse its representativeness. Consequently, one of the most polluting industries will be analysed. Particularly, the environmental behaviour (according to the variables under examination) of firms belonging to Spanish Metal Industry (production and transformation of metals), with 100 or more employees, will be studied.
