The Development of CSR Reporting in the Middle East

Jeannette Vinke and Aida El-Khatib

Chapter 7 in CSR in the Middle East, 2012, pp 136-157 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been gaining importance globally over the last few years, as numerous supporters have advocated its integration into day-to-day business practices and many researchers have advocated the business case for doing so (Vogel, 2005; Gray et al., 2010). Aside from financial performance reporting, there has been renewed interest in recent years in social performance reporting, or what is commonly referred to as CSR reporting. CSR in the Middle East is generally considered to be lagging behind CSR practice in more developed economies (Al-Khater and Naser, 2003; Mezher et al., 2010). The peculiar socio-economic landscape of the Middle East region implies that the forces that both drive and hinder CSR are unique to this region as well (Mezher et al., 2010).
