Introduction: Decentralized Energy as a Disruptive Innovation

Christoph Burger and Jens Weinmann

A chapter in The Decentralized Energy Revolution, 2013, pp 1-6 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Disruptive innovations threaten the market dominance of established producers of goods and services, as Harvard professor Clayton Christensen describes it. The producers of these innovations frequently start off with low gross margins and a small target market, but they incrementally move up the scale and may eventually displace established competitors. Their success strategy is to offer a different value proposition than the one being offered by incumbent players; even if the products are inferior in some aspects, consumers are willing to buy in. Many industries have been shattered and reorganized after disruptive innovations, including the computer industry (from mainframes to laptops and tablets), telecommunications (from landlines to cell phones and smart phones), and camera manufacturers (from analog to digital).
