Abstract: Abstract This chapter investigates the causes of the BRICs’ innovation deficit. The investigation focuses first on the cases of China and Russia, where authoritarianism has a negative impact on innovation, and, second, on Brazil and India, where despite authoritarianism’s absence, inequality keeps innovation from achieving its full potential. Then the focus shifts to what is missing from the BRICs: a relationship linking innovation, equality and development – the so-called innovation-equality-development triangle
