Acting the part
Adrian Furnham
A chapter in The Engaging Manager, 2012, pp 32-34 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract You are lucky enough to find yourself directing a potential Hollywood blockbuster. The movie is about business. It’s one of those modern redemptive remakes of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: the story of a narcissistic, egocentric, greedy and selfish person, doing anything to succeed (a sort of Gordon Gekko). This unpleasant individual ducks and weaves, charms and bamboozles, and is seriously economical with the truth. But the all-important feel-good factor is the key to the movie — such characters always see the error of their ways and spend the rest of their lives giving away their ill-gotten gains and restoring social justice.
