Chapter 3 in Production Structure and Productivity of Japanese Agriculture, 2013, pp 77-95 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The previous chapters, 1 and 2, have respectively investigated quantitatively the effects of the price-support programs and the set-aside programs on transfers of farmlands by either selling and buying or renting out and renting in from small farms to large farms for more efficient and productive farming on larger-scale farms. To put it one way, we have found that both policies have limited the possibilities of movements of farmlands from small to large farms. To put it another way, the transition of the basic structure of small-scale farming to larger-scale farming has not proceeded smoothly against our expectation.
