Trends in the Trade of Developing Countries, 1980–2010

Constantine Michalopoulos

Chapter 1 in Emerging Powers in the WTO, 2014, pp 1-22 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The period covered by this study, 1980–2012, witnessed a rapid expansion of world trade and an even more rapid expansion of developing countries’ trade, especially in the last decade (see Appendix A for a description of developing country and group coverage). The share of trade in developing countries in total world merchandise trade (exports plus imports) was appreciably higher at the end of the period than at the beginning: 27 per cent as opposed to 39 per cent (see Tables 1.1 and 1.2). There was a sharp decline in world trade in 2009, though this was offset by an even larger increase in 2010. Trade growth has decelerated in 2011–12, with exports growing at about 2 per cent in 2012 compared with 5 per cent in 2011; and there are many uncertainties about 2013. Yet, this does not affect these broad overall trends.
