Abstract: Abstract In the late 1990s, I traded my job on Wall Street in Latin American corporate finance for a business journalism fellowship that took my wife and me on a two-year journey through Mexico. For the first time, I witnessed rural poverty. I also met many leaders in the countryside, often managers of agricultural businesses like farmer cooperatives, that had as much poise, sense of purpose, and leadership skills as any congressman or CEO.
