Taking a Communication Perspective at Work

Abstract:
Abstract Letting go of the old myths about effective communication is the first step in re-making communication at work. The second step is taking a communication perspective in each area of your working life. Drawing on Pearce and Cronen’s development of CMM (coordinated management of meaning) theory, the phrase “communication perspective” has been described in diverse ways and it has come to mean different things. For me, it is just a shorthand way of remembering that: communication actually makes things, and the patterns of communication and interaction that we engage in at work shape our experience, influence our outcomes, and color the quality of our working lives. A communication perspective at work becomes the lens through which you can see the patterns you engage in for what they are and what they can be.
