Abstract:
Abstract Seventy-eight percent of eighth graders in Michigan met the state’s standard for proficiency in science in 2009. The real story, though, is that the state’s standard is far below the National Assessment of Educational Process (NAEP) cutoff for merely “Basic” performance in science. In fact, only 26 percent of the state’s eighth graders meet the benchmark for college readiness when they ultimately graduate high school.1
