Abstract:
Abstract The current funding environment for social enterprises in Latin America reveals a major obstacle to their development and a cost that must be borne by stakeholders if the sector is to grow and flourish. To appreciate the funding situation of social enterprises in the region, it is important to understand how civil society organizations (CSO) are funded overall, since most of the social enterprises remain CSO operated. CSOs in the region are still very grant dependent and require donations to support them in delivering their services to society and to survive as organizations. Although some CSOs do practice some form of self-financing, as a proportion of their financing it is for the most part too low to sustain the organizations in the long term.
