Chapter Chapter 1 in Saudi Government Revenues and Expenditures, 2013, pp 7-22 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The Saudi economy is large in size but simple in structure. It is best described as a government economy within the frame of a market economy. The government owns and manages the oil and gas sector, the principal driver of the economy. The government provides a variety of public goods and services, including education, healthcare, housing, utilities, loans, subsidies, etc.1 Moreover, the government owns major equity shares in private sector mega joint-stock companies, such as the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).2
