Abstract Note: This article, by the man who, thirty-eight years later, was to become the first President of the Italian Republic, first appeared in the Milan daily, Corriere della Sera, 7 December 1910. It has been republished in a collection of Professor Einaudi’s writing edited by Ernesto Rossi, entitled Il Buongoverno (Bari: Laterza, 1954, pp. 521–526)
