Chapter 5 in Luigi Einaudi: Selected Political Essays, Volume 3, 2014, pp 53-84 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract At a time when there is much talk of unification, particularly between the Socialist and the Social Democratic parties, and when hints of talks between Socialists and Christian Democrats do not appear to have completely faded — and when the Communists perhaps would prefer not to be excluded — then it may not be inappropriate to point out that unifications, agreements, pacts and talks should be based on an idea, a political idea. Now, a political idea means one that defines an action, but if no political idea exists, what then can form the core of debate among the heads of parties in their attempt to reach an agreement or ascertain that they disagree?
